Kent Beck, world-renowned programmer once wrote, “I’m not a great programmer; I’m just a good programmer with great habit.” But everyone knows by experience that it is so hard to adopt new habits and even more difficult to get rid of bad ones.
Charles Duhigg, through fascinating real stories, convinces us that changing habits is possible. But as giving up cigarettes is different from how you prioritize tasks at work, The Power of Habit does not try to deliver the secret formula for quickly changing any habit. There isn’t one formula. There are thousands. So, this book delivers a framework for understanding how habits work and a guide to experimenting with how they might change.
Each chapter explains a different aspect of why habits exist and how they function, based on two or three stories (from Michael Phelps to the toothpaste). Overall, the book is good but I clearly preferred the first part on personal habits. As the book progresses through the habits of successful companies and the habits of the society, I felt less captivated, probably because I was less interested by these topics.
I really appreciate the appendix, which distill in a simple way the tactics that researchers have found for shaping habits within our own lives. A good place to start in complement to the deeper lessons from this book.
In the end, despite the popularity of this book, I think there is room for another book on the subject. Maybe Stick with It, published in 2017 (5 years later) could fill this role.
